Ben Garcia of Hideaway Kennels has quietly earned himself the reputation of being one of today’s foremost bird dog trainers. People have gotten to know and respect Ben through his professionalism on guided hunts and his field trial participation.
Ben’s training days began in college while he earned his degree in Communication, specializing in non-verbal communication techniques such as interactive learning. He caught the training bug while guiding goose hunts, and for many years, he learned under the late Fred Schulze of Southview Kennels. Fred was a true friend and mentor who helped develop the training methods and breeding strategies still utilized by Ben today.
After College Ben formally formed Hideaway Kennels and started to train professionally. Over the next 15 years he would train hundreds of bird dogs for owners all over the country. With a busy schedule of training both Field Trial Dogs and Hunting Dogs his success was felt nation wide. With over 600 AKC field trial placements, over 10 AKC National Championship placements, over 30 Field Trial Champions, and 3 National Champions it was obvious he was successful at training! For years he was the Colorado AKC Gun Dog of the Year, Derby of the Year and Puppy of the Year trainer. Many owners from all over the country sent dogs to him to train and campaign. In 2013 with over 800,000 miles traveled and placements from border to border and coast to coast he retired from competing and now spends his time focusing on training bird dogs for the public.
The kennels are located at the nationally known Rocky Mountain Roosters hunting club in Calhan, Colorado. With over 5,000 acres of prairie and river bottom and hundreds of birds RMR is the perfect place for dogs to succeed. The property also has over 15 training ponds perfect for water work!
